The Plastic Free July Challenge is here! Join with millions of folk around our Earth looking for ways to reduce their consumption of the dreaded single use plastic that is cluttering up our planet.

Did you know that a plastic drinks bottle takes around 450 years to decompose in landfill? Scary stuff when you think that you probably only used it for a few minutes. Perhaps a flask is the way forward for you?

This Plastic Free July try to spot the single use plastics in your daily routine and see if there’s a better way. It may seem only a small thing to you, but join the #PlasticFreeJuly community online and you will find strength in numbers! We’d love to see your swaps too, so don’t forget to tag us in your posts.

We’ve partnered with our friends at Happy Planet Online to introduce you to a few products we think will help.

1. Reusable make-up wipes

Doris & Dude

Absolute gem. For just £4 you can grab a set of 5 reusable make-up pads made from bamboo and cotton (you know we love these ingredients!), and wave goodbye to plastic wrapped packs of disposables by the hundred. Simply pop into the handy cotton bag and chuck in with your next load in the washing machine and job’s a good’un.

2. Dishwashing soap bar

Doris & Dude

How many bottles of washing up liquid do you reckon you go through in a year? Ouch. This brilliant little bar not only ditches the plastic packaging, but also the harsh chemicals of the usual stuff. It’s free of palm oil and is handmade right here in the UK.

3. Bamboo toothbrush

Doris & Dude

There’s that magic material again! Oh we do love a nice bit of bamboo, but why stop at socks (awesome as they are)?! Instead of buying your next toothbrush made of plastic, packaged in plastic, swap to a bamboo version instead!

Bamboo is a super sustainable and versatile material – have a read through our blog Meet Bamboo to find out why we choose to make bamboo socks.

4. Soy Wax Melts

Doris & Dude

We all want our homes to smell nice but lets be honest it is a challenge, and sometimes an open window just doesn’t quite cut it. But before you head to the supermarket shelves piled high with sprays, spritzes and plug-ins, consider this. These little tins of melts are handmade, ethically sourced and vegan, and offer 20hours of burn time to freshen up your atmosphere. And in fragrances like coconut, birthday cake and cherry blossom how could you resist?! Just drop one into the top of an oil burner, light a tea light underneath and you’re away.

And if you’re enjoying the warm fuzzy feeling brought on by doing a good deed for your planet this Plastic Free July, why stop there? Choosing sustainable clothing is another way individuals can make a change, and our bamboo and organic cotton socks are as kind to the planet as they are to your feet. Did you know conventional cotton production can put a huge strain on the land and the communities that live there? Read more about organic cotton socks here on our blog.

We hope these ideas are enough to get you started on a fun and successful Plastic Free July – maybe you’ll even find a swap or two that you can make permanently. Follow us on social media and keep us updated as you take on the challenge!
